Community Engagement:

SAIL

I was chosen as a Service Leader for the 2017-2018 academic year, and had the privilege of resurrecting a program called SAIL, the Student Alliance of Interfaith Leaders. This program is not a club, but an interfaith initiative. We planned and hosted events to support our three goals 1.) Unify our diverse religious community by promoting understanding, 2.) Teach students interfaith skills to use throughout their lifetimes, 3.) Unite in meeting community needs.

After receiving training at the Utah Interfaith Leadership Lab at Utah State University as well as the Interfaith Leadership Institute in Chicago by the IFYC, I was able to bring what I learned back to SUU's campus. It was an extremely rewarding experience and something I hope to continue throughout my life.

Some of our events include the following:

  • Dinner & Dialogue (a monthly event)

  • Interfaith Mini Break (we took a group of 15 up to Salt Lake for the weekend and visited a Jewish Synagogue, Catholic Cathedral, Buddhist Temple, Church of Scientology, Greek Orthodox Church, Hindu Temple, and LDS Temple Square).

  • Interfaith Thanksgiving (this event was co-sponsored by the LDS institute and had over 80 people in attendance)

  • Religion Panels (we held both a Christian Religions Panel and a Non-Christian Religions Panel; panelists were locals

  • and more!

After a year of hard work, I was selected as the recipient of Utah Campus Compact's "Community Engaged Student" Award (pictured above). It was an honor to be the only student selected for the 2017-2018 school year, and to know that my work with SAIL has made a lasting impact on SUU.

Alternative Break: Guatemala

SUU takes dozens of students on trips around the nation and the world every year on "Alternative Breaks". The students who attend choose to spend their Spring or Winter Break doing service abroad instead of laying lazily on the beach somewhere. For my Alternative Break, I got to go to Antigua, Guatemala and volunteer in an orphanage. It was a very rewarding trip, and so worth it.
